Ferry Hydraulic System Replacement
Background
Both docks are showing advanced wear to their protective coating, with areas of surface corrosion visible on components such as girders, stringers, floor beams, and bracket bolts. To restore and preserve these structures, the project will include full containment, surface preparation, and application of a new protective coating system across all steel elements. Our engineering consultant, David Evans & Associates, reviewed the most recent Routine/NSTM & Underwater Inspection Reports and performed an in‑depth inspection, confirming the anticipated coating quantities and recommending replacement of the bracket bolts and lateral gusset plates. The project also includes targeted steel repairs, concrete patching from past impact damage, and replacement of aging aprons with newer, modern aprons and flaps.
In addition, both docks are equipped with older electrical and hydraulic systems that have reached the end of their service life. These systems support operation of the transfer spans and aprons, and upgrades are needed to ensure long-term reliability, reduce unscheduled maintenance, and support consistent service for Guemes Ferry operations.
Funding
Skagit County successfully secured federal funding of $5,788,000 through the Washington State Department of Transportation’s Local Bridge Program for improvements to both the Anacortes and Guemes Island ferry docks. This grant allows the County to move forward with critical preservation work on both ferry dock structures and helps ensure continued safe and reliable service for the Guemes Island Ferry community.
