Anacortes Parking Lot Improvements

Background
The Public Works Ferry Division is working on a redesign of the ferry terminal loading lanes and parking area to improve safety, efficiency, and compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (A.D.A.).
The closest parking lot for the Anacortes ferry terminal offers striped angled parking without sufficient turnaround space at the far end of the parking area to exit the lot. There is also no sidewalk infrastructure for ferry users to walk safely through the parking lot to the terminal loading area.
The ferry loading lanes are additionally inefficient for the available space at the terminal. The area does not meet A.D.A. standards for crosswalk and pedestrian safety, and the pavement was last resurfaced in 2005.
The project proposal will expand the holding lanes, relieving some of the pressure on 6th street when cars are lined up down the street waiting for the ferry. The terminal lot will be reconfigured with new A.D.A. compliant sidewalks, parking stalls, and crosswalks.
Current Work
This project is currently on hold until early 2027 as the Department evaluates budget priorities for upcoming Public Works projects. Staff have submitted the required shoreline permits to the City of Anacortes for the ferry terminal and parking lot construction plans.
The City has also expressed interest in managing the two parking lots at the Anacortes terminal. The County and City are discussing an agreement which would allow for the City to take over management of the lots.
