Fix car leaks
Car fluids don’t just drip on the ground. They drip on the ground and get washed into the nearest storm drain, and then into our local waterways. Those drips add up quickly, and they can harm the fish, orca whales, and all the other animals living in our streams and marine waters.
Get those leaks fixed! Your car will last longer, too. Learn how to diagnose your leak, get tips for working with your mechanic, and learn how to prevent leaks.
Wash your car the right way
The average home car wash uses 65 gallons of water. When that water runs off your driveway, it carries soap, dirt, oil, and road grease into the nearest storm drain or ditch, and from there, directly into a creek without treatment.
Use a commercial car wash. Commercial car washes treat and recycle their wash water, using less water and keeping pollutants out of local waterways.
Or, wash your car on a gravel or grassy area so the soil can filter the water.

Check your tires monthly for proper inflation
Scientists recently discovered a chemical in tire dust called 6PPD-q that's highly toxic to coho salmon. Properly inflated tires shed less tire dust and last longer. Proper inflation gets you better fuel efficiency and safer car trips too!
Get an air pressure gauge at an auto parts store or online, or borrow one from a friend. You can find the ideal tire pressure listed in the car's owner manual or on the inside of the driver's side door. Check your tire pressure monthly, and fill it immediately whenever the pressure is lower than the ideal level.
