The Washington State Shoreline Management Act (SMA) requires that Skagit County maintain a Shoreline Master Program (SMP) for the purpose of guiding activity and development along the state's shoreline areas.
The SMP works with other chapters of the Skagit County Code to protect and preserve saltwater and freshwater shorelines throughout the county by managing natural resources and directing development and land use suitable for the shoreline environment.
Skagit County’s SMP was originally adopted by the Board of County Commissioners on June 29, 1976, and received state approval on October 5, 1976. Amendments have been made to the SMP, most recently on July 10, 1995.
