About the Household Hazardous Waste Facility
Location: Ovenell Recycling and Transfer Station
Hours: Monday through Friday, 10:00 am to 4:00 pm, and the same hours on the first Saturday of each month.
Hazardous Waste Notes
If a product label says “Danger”, “Warning”, or “Caution,” do not throw it in the trash. Use it up or bring it to the Household Hazardous Waste Facility.
Hazardous waste is accepted from Skagit County residents and qualifying businesses only.
Free disposal is available for Skagit County households.
This information is for households only. Businesses must contact the Small Quantity Generator Program at (360) 416-1580 to arrange for disposal of chemicals.
Please note: There is a limit of 25 gallons of household hazardous waste per month. Contact the Hazardous Waste Facility at (360) 416-1580 for more information.
No explosives, radioactive materials, asbestos, or marine flares are accepted.
Examples of Accepted Household Waste
You can bring many common household hazardous products to the facility. The lists below show examples of items that are accepted.

Gasoline and diesel fuels are accepted. They must come in containers of 5 gallons or less, be sealed, and you leave the containers at the facility.
All paints and stains, including latex, are accepted. Do not combine them. Leave them in their original containers with the labels on.
Only the following materials may be disposed of on a self-serve basis seven days a week from 8:30 am to 6:00 pm on the outside of the Hazardous Waste Building.
- Antifreeze – 5 gal per week limit
- Batteries – vehicle and rechargeable. Alkaline batteries are garbage.
- Used motor oil – 5 gal per week limit
Reduce your use of chemicals
You can lower the amount of hazardous waste you create by changing how you choose and use products.
Research the problem
When you face a problem that seems to require a hazardous chemical solution, take some time to do a bit of research. Look for a solution that is non-toxic, with no warning label, or less toxic, with a caution label.
Buy less
When you buy a hazardous product, buy only what you will use up in a reasonable length of time. If you have leftovers you cannot use, share them with your neighbors.
Avoid aerosols
Often the propellant is used up before the product is emptied out of the can. You may put completely empty aerosol containers into your regular garbage. If there is any product remaining in the can, you must treat it as hazardous waste.
