The Marblemount bridge rehabilitation project was intended to span two construction seasons in 2025 and 2026, and the original construction sequencing plans allowed the contractor to close the bridge for a period of time during both seasons. When the Marblemount bridge is closed, the only available detour route east of the bridge is Rockport Cascade Road. Because of the bridge washout over Jordan Creek, Rockport Cascade Road cannot be used as a detour route during closures.
The contractor had originally planned to have 15 days of intermittent, day-time closures, and one continuous 15-day closure during the construction season this summer. In order to minimize the impact of these bridge closures, the County will be requiring the contractor to conduct the 15 intermittent closures at night from 8pm - 4pm, Monday night through Friday morning. Additionally, to avoid the 15-day continuous closure, the contractor has agreed to conduct the planned deck resurfacing activities without fully closing the bridge to traffic.
Public Works staff are working on a plan with local emergency responders, including the Skagit County Sheriff and regional fire agency, to ensure first responders would still have adequate access during the night-time closures.
