Property Tax Deferral
Property Tax Deferral
A deferral postpones payment of your property taxes. Unlike an exemption, it does not reduce them. Washington offers two deferral programs, and both are administered by the Department of Revenue.
Deferral for Senior Citizens and People with Disabilities
If you qualify, the Department of Revenue pays your property taxes and special assessments to the county on your behalf. The deferred amount accrues simple interest and becomes a lien on your property in favor of the state until it is repaid, usually when the home is sold, the owner passes away, or the home is no longer the owner's primary residence (chapter RCW 84.38). Age, disability, and ownership requirements are similar to the exemption program, with a higher income limit set for each county.
Deferral for Homeowners with Limited Income
Homeowners of any age who meet an income limit may defer the second half of their property taxes, due October 31 (chapter RCW 84.37).
