Kids Preparedness
Prepared Kids are Ready Kids
Kids can be part of emergency Preparedness too. Learning what to do before an emergency can help children feel more confident and know how to stay safe.
Learn, Play & Practice
Build a Kid-Friendly Emergency Kit
Invite kids to help choose items for the family emergency kit.
Include things like:
- Water and snacks
- Extra clothes
- Medications
- Comfort item
- Book or small game
- Family contact information
- A recent family photo
Make a Family Plan Together
Include children when you make your household emergency plan. Show them where your emergency supplies are kept and explain what will happen if you need to evacuate or shelter in place.
Practice:
- How to leave home safely
- Where to meet
- What to do if family members are seperated
- How they will contact you if phone service is limited
Help Children Cope
Children may react differently before, during, and after an emergency. Stay calm, give simple and honest explanations, limit repeated exposure to upsetting news, and encourage children to ask questions.
Keeping familiar routines when possible can also help children feel more secure.
Practice Regualry
Review your family plan and practice it together. Short simple drills can help children remember what to do without making emergencies feel frightening.
