Public Records Request and Washington State PRA Exemption
Please be advised that the Coroner’s Office is not subject to the Washington State Public Records Act (PRA) as outlined in RCW 42.56. Unlike other county agencies, the Coroner’s Office operates under separate statutory provisions, which govern the confidentiality and disclosure of records pertaining to death investigations.
Records held by the Coroner’s Office are subject to specific exemptions under RCW 68.50, which limit the availability of certain documents, including autopsy reports, investigative records, and other related materials. In accordance with these legal provisions, we are unable to release certain records except under specific circumstances as defined by law.
If a records request qualifies for access under an applicable statutory exemption, our office requires the requestor to provide identification and additional details and documents regarding the request so we may evaluate it accordingly. Otherwise, our office is unable to fulfill any records request under the guidelines of the Public Records Act.

Third Party Requests for Coroner Records
Release of Coroner Report to Outside Agency
If you are a third party, such as an insurance company or attorney, you must obtain authorization from the legal next of kin to obtain coroner records. A release for patient medical records (RCW 70.02) may not be substituted to request coroner records. Use the request (linked above) for parties not listed in RCW 68.50.105.
