Know the Risk
Wildland fires can threaten homes, communities, transportation routes, and natural areas throughout Skagit County. Hot, dry, and windy conditions can allow fires to spread quickly, sometimes with little warning.
Before a Wildland Fire
- Remove dead vegetation, leaves, needles, and other combustible debris from around your home.
- Keep roofs, gutters, decks, and areas beneath decks clear.
- Maintain defensible space around structures.
- Know more than one way out of your neighborhood when possible.
- Prepare a Go Kit.
- Include medications, important documents, clothing, food, water, and supplies for pets and livestock.

Know the Evacuation Levels
READY - Level 1
A threat is in your area.
Be aware of conditions and prepare to evacuate. Review your evacuation plan, know your routes, gather essential items, and monitor official information.
SET - Level 2
Be prepared to leave on short notice
Conditions may change quickly. Be ready to evacuate and early if you need additional time or assistance.
GO - Level 3
Evacuate now
Leave the area immediately and follow directions from emergency officials.
During a Wildland Fire
Follow evacuation instructions from local officials.
Do not wait for conditions to become visibly dangerous before leaving. If you feel unsafe or need extra time to evacuate, leave early.
Take your Go Kit, medications, and pets with you.
Avoid closed roads and routes being used by emergency responders.
If trapped in a vehicle:
Park away from vegetation.
Turn on headlights and hazards.
Close all windows and vents.
Stay low.
Do not return until cleared. Wildland fire areas may have downed power lines, hot spots, and dangerous debris even after the visible fire passes.
After
Return only after officials say the area is safe.
Watch for damaged trees, hot spots, downed power lines, and unstable structures.
Continue monitoring smoke and air quality because unhealthy conditions may continue after the immediate fire threat has passed.
